AICC(WA)’s GeoPolitical Event with Mr Gregory Copley AM,

Event Speech Abstract:

Gregory Copley AM, in his regular geopolitical address to the AICC, says that Australia is failing to compete with the rest of the regional world. As a result of the move by Australia, starting in the 1980s, to move toward becoming a “post-industrial society”, Australia is failing on all key metrics, falling behind its regional and global neighbors. Life expectancy is down. Productivity is down. Our standard of living is falling as our per capita GDP and wealth declines. Our levels of individual freedom are down. Our vulnerabilities in our international and domestic supply chain have increased, and our security is now absolutely committed to the hands of allies to whom we are a secondary consideration. Entrepreneurship is severely restricted by comparison to global best practices. We are regional leaders only in our own minds. And yet, like frogs in a pot being brought to the boil, we still think we are the lucky country, and, frankly, smarter than everyone else. What are we smoking? Well, smoko is now over. How can we understand what a “post-industrial society” is supposed to be anyway, and how do we put utopia back in its magic lantern so that we can get back to work?

Gregory R. Copley Profile: Western Australian Gregory Copley, President of the Washington, DC-based International Strategic Studies Association, has worked in a personal advisory capacity to national leaders for a half-century. He is a specialist in strategic intelligence and psychological strategy, and has authored or co-authored 37 books as well as thousands of classified and unclassified studies. His latest book is The Noble State: Governance Options in an Ignoble Era, and his book, The New Total War of the 21 st Century and the Trigger of the Fear Pandemic, appeared in 2020.

He heads the Global Information System (GIS), which collects and analyses intelligence on 289 countries and territories for governments.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2007 for his contributions to the international community. Copley was made a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society in 2011, and in 2014 was awarded the Society’s Erebus Medal. He was invested with the Freedom of the City of London in 2024. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales. He has also been the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including being created an hereditary peer by the Ethiopian Crown.

Mr Copley has also had an extensive career as an industrialist, owning British shipyards and heavy engineering companies, a naval architectural firm, publishing companies, and chemical and perfume companies in France. He was Vice-Chairman of the Scottish national airline, Highland Express, in the 1980s.
